Themes in contemporary Indigenous mental health and suicide prevention research – an analysis of the Research and evaluation register
Abstract
This paper presents a thematic analysis of the Indigenous Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Clearinghouse’s Research and evaluation register, curated by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Drawing on over 130 records, the paper identifies and synthesises key themes in contemporary research focused on the mental health and social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The analysis highlights recurring themes such as cultural safety, cultural continuity, determinants and protective factors, service planning, and research methods. It also explores demographic trends and identifies gaps in existing research, particularly in studies that foreground First Nations-led approaches and strengths-based narratives. This work contributes to ongoing efforts to support better-informed, culturally appropriate, and community-driven social and emotional wellbeing strategies for First Nations people in Australia.
